The BRICKEY Family Genealogy
The following information is gleaned from Brickey family members, my personal knowledge, and excerpts
from, "The Brickey Heritage" by Raymond Luther Brickey - a distant relative whom I assisted with his
research for the book while I was attending Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA in 1982 :
From research done through the Southwestern Virginia Genealogical Society and talking
to several elderly Brickey Family members and gathering documents saved by those individuals,
Raymond Brickey, author of "The Brickey Heritage" learned . . .
Jean Bricquet was the progenitor of all the Brickeys in the U.S.A. and according to the 1815
Brickey Bible residing in the Virginia Room of the Roanoke Public Library, John Brickey ( his
anglicized name in the U.S. ) came from the ancient Northern France province of Artois ( which
corresponds to the present department of Pas de Calais, France ) with his wife about the year
1680 to Charles Town, SC, because as a Huguenot he was facing imminent persecution by the
Catholic Church. His name was anglicized in Maryland and it is believed he resided in Annapolis.
Later the immigrant lived in Westmoreland County where records of the Brickey family in
Virginia began about 1690. John Brickey's children were JOHN, JARAD, JINNY, MARY and
PETER. All further Brickeys in America are descended from John's son Peter Brickey, as he
was the immigrant's only son to have male children.
The Brickey descendants are located in all of the states of the U.S., with a great many of them
located throughout Virginia, especially the Southwest corner of the state.
I have attached a scan of the BRICKEY Family Coat of Arms that Tiffany's of NY stated in a
letter, "According to Rietstap's 'Armorial General', the Bricquet family came from Artois, an
ancient province of Northern France, corresponding to the present department of Pas de Calais.
From the Ninth to the Twelfth Century, Artois belonged to the Counts of Flanders, and the title
of Count of Artois, was borne by Charles the Second of France, before his accession to the
throne. The title became extinct on the death of the Count de Chambord, in 1883. Although no
specific date is listed for the granting of the Coat of Arms in the name of 'Briquet', it must
certainly be quite old, as the ancient province of Artois became known as Pas de Calais in 1790.
The Coat of Arms motto, DITAT SERVATA FIDES is translated as, 'Faith Kept Enriched',
and the Arms are done in colors of minor Nobility ( Red, Gold, Silver ).
